The following statement was issued by Ayaan Moledina, Deputy Executive Director of The Youth Power Project:

As the Texas Legislature concluded the 88th regular legislative session yesterday, the Youth Power Project (YPP) would like to highlight our achievements. Our student-written bill, HB 2647, was sponsored by State Representative Carl Sherman. This bill granted Texas school districts the option to establish a non-voting student trustee position on their board of trustees.

Our youth forward bill gained support of a bipartisan group of lawmakers, including House Public Education Committee Chairman Brad Buckley. Student activists, partners, and the leadership of Chairman Buckley and Rep. Sherman successfully passed the bill with strong bipartisan support in the House of Representatives. We take pride in the progress we made this session, as passing a bill in even one chamber is no easy task.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Speaker Phelan, members of the legislature, and the dedicated legislative staff who collaborated with us during this session. Our commitment to amplifying student voices in matters that impact us will remain unwavering, and we will persist in our advocacy until the end.
